Chinese Company Convicted of Environmental Destruction to Build Foča-Šćepan Polje Highway

The reconstruction and construction of the Foča-Šćepan Polje highway, also known as the “Death Road”, has been discussed for years. As far back as 2017, the authorities of Republika Srpska planned to finance this project through European institutions or European creditors on favourable terms. However, this year, the entity government turned to credit sources from China. Thus, the Prime Minister of Republika Srpska, Radovan Višković, based on criteria known to him, decided that the highway would be built by the Chinese company CRBC (China Road and Bridge Corporation). The funding has not yet been secured. The government’s plan is to borrow the money from the Chinese EXIM Bank.

From the beginning of 2021 until the end of 2023, the company “Mraz” Ltd. from Pale has collected 456,000 KM from the employment support program provided by the Employment Bureau of Republika Srpska. This wouldn’t be controversial if the employees of this company, which besides Pale also has business units in Foča and Nevesinje, were not employed on fixed-term contracts for one month, only to be re-employed for the same positions after this period expired, while the company collected new incentives for employing “new workers” during that time.
